You’re Not Broken, You’re Broadband
It’s two in the morning and my brain won’t shut off.
This is not unusual. This is most nights, and has been for thirty years. The body wants sleep. The brain wants one more thread, one more tab, one more rabbit hole into the dark. It has found something interesting and it is not prepared to negotiate.
If you want to know what “disorder” feels like from the inside, it’s this. Not drama. Not crisis. Just a machine that will not power down on request, night after night, while the part of you that has to work in the morning files another complaint that nobody reads.
I was lying there with a phone in my hand, the way you do, when I came across a video of an older woman explaining her work on consciousness. White hair, warm face, grandmother energy. Not who I expected to change my life at 2am on a Tuesday.
She was talking about people with brains like mine, and she said this:
They’re not disordered. They’re operating at a higher frequency.
Then she said the thing that actually got me — the part that made me sit up in bed:
These aren’t damaged brains. They’re advanced systems running in an outdated environment. Like trying to push fiber-optic data through a 1995 dial-up modem. The system isn’t broken. It’s just not built for this.
I sat up because I recognized the shape of it immediately. Not spiritually. Technically. I’d spent my whole career around the difference between a part that’s defective and a part that’s fine but installed in the wrong assembly, and I had never once thought to apply that distinction to myself.
(The woman was Dolores Cannon. Her larger framework — where those ideas come from and what she believed they meant — is a whole conversation, and I’ve given it its own chapter later on, clearly marked, so you can take it or leave it. You do not have to accept one word of her cosmology for this chapter to work. The metaphor stands on its own, and that’s what I want to show you now.)
Let’s take the metaphor apart, because a metaphor you haven’t inspected is just a slogan.
Two connections. Dial-up moves data slowly, in sequence, one thing at a time, over a line built for voice. Broadband moves an enormous volume simultaneously, in parallel, over infrastructure built for exactly that.
Now: which one is better?
Trick question. Neither, in the abstract. It depends entirely on what’s on the other end.
Plug broadband into modern infrastructure and it’s transformative. Plug that same connection into a 1995 system — one designed around the assumption that data arrives slowly, in order, one item at a time — and it doesn’t just fail to help. It actively breaks things. The receiving system wasn’t built to handle that much at once. It buffers. It drops packets. It throws errors.
From the outside it looks like the connection is malfunctioning.
The connection is fine. The connection is, in fact, superior. It’s the pairing that’s broken.
Here’s why this is more than a nice image, and why it answers the question Chapter 3 left open.
Remember the problem with “deficit”: deficits don’t take days off. If you genuinely had less attention than other people, you’d be worse everywhere. But you’re not. You’re catastrophic on the expense report and excellent in the emergency. Same brain, same day, opposite results.
A deficit model can’t explain that. It has to fall back on character — you could do it if you cared enough — which is where the shame comes from and where every one of us has spent time.
The bandwidth model explains it without needing your character at all.
If your system takes in more simultaneously — more sound, more visual field, more associations, more possible connections between things — then two predictions follow, and you can check them against your own life right now.
Prediction one: you will struggle badly in any environment that requires ignoring most of what’s present. A classroom is that. An office is that. A form is that. These are environments where success means shutting nearly everything out and pushing one narrow stream of low-interest data in sequence. That’s a dial-up task. You do not have a dial-up connection. You cannot throttle down on command, and every year you get told that your inability to throttle down is a defect of will.
Prediction two: you will outperform in any environment where the important information is unpredictable and distributed. A shop floor at seven in the morning. A crisis. A problem nobody’s solved yet, where the answer isn’t in the expected place. Here, taking in everything at once stops being noise and becomes the entire job. The guy who notices the wrong sound from the far bay is not a different guy from the one who can’t finish the paperwork. It’s the same guy, and it’s the same trait, and the only variable is the room.
I have never met anyone with this wiring for whom those two predictions weren’t obviously, boringly true the second they stopped to check.
That’s what makes this better than a reframe. It’s not a nicer story. It’s a model that makes predictions, and the predictions come out right.
Now let me tell you where the metaphor breaks, because I don’t trust anybody who hands you a comparison and doesn’t show you its edges.
It’s not a claim about intelligence. Broadband isn’t smarter. It’s wider. Those are different things, and if you walk away from this chapter thinking you’re secretly a genius who’s been held back, you’ve taken the wrong lesson and it will make you insufferable at parties. Bandwidth is a property of the pipe, not a measure of what’s coming through it.
It doesn’t make the costs go away. A system that takes in everything at once is genuinely harder to sleep with. It’s harder to sit in a boring meeting with. It’s harder to bring to a task that has to be finished in order. Those aren’t illusions created by a bad label — they’re real properties of the actual hardware, and no amount of reframing retires them. I still miss things. I still have to build ridiculous scaffolding to make ordinary tasks happen. The model explains my life. It didn’t fix it.
And it’s a metaphor, not neuroscience. I’m not telling you a lab has confirmed your brain is fiber and somebody else’s is copper. I’m telling you it’s a useful description — one that predicts your actual results better than “deficit” does. That’s the claim. That’s the whole claim. Hold it as a working model, and drop it the day something explains you better.
So what actually changes?
Not much, on Monday. That’s the honest answer, and it’s the one the affirmation books won’t give you. You’ll still lose your keys. Nobody hands you a new brain for finishing a chapter.
What changes is the question you’re asking.
For thirty years my question was: what’s wrong with me, and how do I fix it? That question generated thirty years of the same answer, which was try harder, which had never once worked, and which I kept running anyway because the question demanded it.
The bandwidth model retires that question and replaces it with a much better one:
What am I plugged into, and can I change it?
That question has answers. Real, findable, boring, practical answers — which room, which kind of work, which time of day, which structures, which tools, which people. Every one of them is something you can actually go test this week.
That’s the rest of this book. Not fixing the connection. Fixing the pairing.
Because the connection was never the problem.
You’re not broken.
You’re broadband, plugged into 1995.
And the good news — the genuinely good news, the reason I spent two decades on this and then wrote it down — is that while you can’t change the connection, you have far more control over what you plug it into than anybody ever told you.
